What Kind of Trainer Are You?
I was listening to an interview and one of the trainers made a great point in the interview. She commented on what kind of a trainer do you want to be. I never really gave that much thought but it is very key in our industry. There are many different types of trainers and depending on what you want to achieve will depend on what kind of trainer you want to become. It will also dictate where you want to locate yourself.
Here are some of the types of trainers that I see and think are out there. This is no scientific study, this is just my opinion. I’m sure I have left some out but here is my list. These are the areas people “specialize” in.
Sports Performance
Movement Patterns
Flexibility
Speed and Agility
Power Lifting
Weight Loss (10-60lbs)
Weight Loss (60-up)
Elderly
High School Athlete
Celebrity
Pro Athlete
Wellness
Rehab
This was just a quick list. The point is, there are so many people out there doing different things. We need to stop judging each other by our own standards. If i see a person doing an exercise “wrong” with a extremely overweight person, I have No grounds to say anything to them because I don’t work with that population. Maybe there is a reason they are doing the exercise “wrong”. Just because you “specialize” in speed training doesn’t mean that everyone in the world should be doing your speed program. This goes for any form of training. We train “People” and we are all made different. Mind, body, and soul; no two of us are the same.
The great trainers out there have an understanding of All forms of training and continue to learn. I know about tons of different forms of training but I know my heart and passion lies in working with High School Athletes. So i go after that market. Can I train overweight people or celebrities?.... Yes. Do I want to?..... No. I am not judging people who do, I am just saying personally its not what I want to do. There are people who love it and I will refer those clients to those people. I think The Rock said it best, “Know your roll and shut your mouth”. If you dont know about a certain clientele then you should not speak about it.
My advice to new trainers is to find your market and your passion. Find who you want to train and go after that area. If you like city people, then you should move to the city. If you like hockey then go to Canada. Go where you need to go in order to train the way you want to. It may be scary at first but you will be happy you did it. A quote i always liked it, “You must do what you have to do, in order to do what you want to do”. I hope this blog helps trainers follow their market and decide the trainer they want to be.
