Should your youth athlete train with a trainer while in-season?

Should your youth athlete train with a trainer while in-season? This is a question I have been asked by clients and parents.  It is a tricky questions because as a business owner it would be really smart for me to say YES, but as a realist I know that most trainers don't have a clue on how to train athletes while they are in season. The honest truth is that almost ALL athletes need some sort of maintenance fitness program while they are playing their sport. The other gods honest truth is that 90% of fitness professionals have no idea of what this should consist of.  The following list is just the tip of the iceberg as to what a maintenance program should entail. If your child's fitness person is NOT addressing these issue, it is time to go elsewhere.  Address muscle adhesions for common overused muscles from the child's sport. If you have worked with sports long enough you will understand that many sports have common overuse patterns. For example, soccer players...

Judgement Day is here for trainers who say they train Athletes

Judgement Day is here for trainers who say they train Athletes.       So now the true test is coming. All those who say they "train athletes" and claim to get great results. All the summer sessions were NOT the test. The test is coming with their season here. Who built athletes that can last a season and who built good looking athletes that can't make it thru preseason without pulling a hammy?  There are a few things I have noticed with trainers who work with Athletes. One is that many of them never follow up to see how their client performed. The true test of how good your training system is, is the performance of your athletes during their season. If an athlete gets a non contact injury during the first few weeks of practice, that means you FAILED them.  I say this because if an athlete trained with you two to three times a week for an entire summer, that athlete should be ready for whatever sport they are going to play. If they are not ready a...

A few friendly tips on how to increase your Social Media Presence

Recently a friend asked me how I developed so many followers on my social media accounts. When I say followers I mean people to actively comment a respond to post. There are many people who have thousands of friends and none of them ever comment or respond to post. Therefore they are not really "active followers" or what I call "true followers".  As I pondered the question I came up with a few tips to help people increase their social media following. Here are tips that have worked for me and my hopes is that they can help you out as well.  Be REAL, Be YOU!  People can sense when someone is being fake, even via the internet. If your post are not true to your character it will not go unnoticed. When people sense you are being real they will develop a connection to you. Once this connection is developed they will look forward to your post, just as a friend looks forward to a phone call or visit.  Also, one day your online friend may meet you in person, so you...

4 Ways to get out of the Matrix

4 Ways to get out of the Matrix  One of the major stresses with people seems to be their lack of ability to disconnect from the virtual world. Between Facebook, instagram, vine, email, twitter, etc there seems to be no escape. We are 'ON" all the time. There leaves little room for you to be able to live in the moment.  I have been dealing with the stress of trying to keep up and have come up with 4 things that have helped me get rid of some of the stress.  I figured it would be a good idea to share these tips with you in hopes that it may be able to help you as well. l Leave your phone in the car.  If you are out to lunch with a good friend, the time should be spent enjoying their company. There should be no need for you to be on your phone while hanging with them. Nothing is worst then being at dinner with a friend and they are on their cell phone texting or checking updates. If the phone is in your pocket or bag you will  hear it and be thinking abou...

4 steps in the ART of a Training Session

The ART of a Training Session Some people may think training a client is just science but I believe it is an art. It is a show that you are putting on for the time they are with you.  In this blog I will give you the three 4 steps of a successful  training sessions.  The introduction (warm up) I see the warm up as the introduction to the show they are about to witness. Your warm up exercises should be preparing them for what they will endure during the session. It should not be a bunch of random exercises you picked out of a hat. If you plan on doing a shoulder dominate session, your warm up should be upper back, shoulder and pec drills. This not only gets the body ready but is also prepares the mind for the session they will have. Yes, the whole body is connected and therefore you must warm it up, but their should be some area of focus. You do not have time to waste. To me a wasted warm up is like introducing the background of a character who serves no purpose...

Pain Should NOT come with age

Pain should not come with age!      As I was walking down the hallway today a person stopped me to ask me about nagging pain. He has been having hip pain as well as some other issues. So I told the person that the pain may be coming from somewhere else, most likely and weak core and under active glute.  He then ask me a question that caught me off guard, he said, "Do you have any pains anywhere?"  I had to think for a second and finally replied, "Nope". Than he asked how old I was and I said, "30". Than he said, "Oh thats why. Talk to me when you're 38.".      That comment stuck with me all day. I kept thinking that pain and age should not go hand in hand. I do understand that the body can not perform at the same level as it use to but that does not mean you should be in pain all the time. I believe pain is a signal your body gives you to let you know that you are doing something wrong. If you are doing nothing wrong, you should not be ...
