"Develop the mindset of a Champion before building the body of a warrior." -Unknown
I read this quote and the first person that came to my mind was Eli Manning. This has nothing to do with me being a Giants fan, but it has everything to do with being a winner.
If you look at Eli, he is not as built as Tebow, he is not a model like Brady, and he is not the perfectionist like his brother. He does however have two Super Bowl rings. So I guess the question is, What makes this average looking guy, a Champion? For some, this would be a very long and complicated answer. To me, it is very simple, he simply believes he is a champion. I know people may say that all players believe in themselves, but this is not true. I remember Kanye said in a song," The people highest up have the lowest self esteem.". Don't confuse trash talking with confidence, they are not one in the same. Many times the trash talking is a defense mechanism to hide the persons inner weakness (That is a topic for another time).
I love how coaches say that sports are 90% mental but they coach 100% physical. If you truly believe that most of the sport is mental, you must coach your players to have the right mindset. Most coaches go into the weight room and condition the athletes for the sport, but when there is a high pressure situation, it doesn't matter how much you can bench. All the squats in the world can not prepare you to know how to act when you need to take the game winning shot. Go back to Eli's two Super Bowl wins and ask yourself how many other QB's would have cracked in those situations? It's a mindset and it can be coached like anything else. We just need to learn how to coach it.
I feel that developing the mind is something people can take with them throughout life. Having a strong mindset will help you overcome adversity and teach you how to react in pressure situations. I'm not saying building a strong body is not as important, but the way I look at it is, you need to have the blueprints drawn up before you start building walls. The mind is the foundation, it is the engine. There is no use in putting a crappy engine in a Lamborghini. So work on you clients/ athletes mindset and watch how everything else falls into place.
