Essential #6
Leading with Discipline
What do you think when you see the word Discipline? For many people the answer would be military. Some of the greatest leaders in the world are in the military. Therefore, I believe we could learn a lot from studying them and what makes them so successful. I am sure if you asked a military leader what made them successful the word Discipline would be top of their list. So what is Discipline?
When thinking of a definition for the word, all I could think about is the Movement my friend Greg Miele has started called "Self - Discipline". To learn more about the movement go to www.selfdiscipline.com. Basically the whole site is about digging deep within and gaining some structure and control in your life. I wear a chain from the site that says on it "Self-Discipline - training of oneself.". I wear this chain as a reminder that I must be disciplined enough to make the best decisions I can for my team and my self.
In order to Lead others you must have Discipline over yourself. People will not follow a reckless leader, at least not for a long period of time. Being disciplined requires initiative, action, commitment and much more. It means being able to resist the temptations of selling out for the loyalty that comes with showing love to your people.
Some of us will be stronger in some areas of discipline than others. For example you may be very good with exercise but bad with nutrition. This is why it is important to have a team of people. All the members of the team should be disciplined in areas that you lack as a leader. This way everyone will benefit from each other and the team as a whole will have the combined discipline to be successful at any task they choose to take on.
Take time out to find where you lack discipline. Once you have made a list of what you are lacking, look for others who are strong in those areas. Find ways in which you can help each other be more disciplined.
